Language And Communication For Technology Example

Language And Communication For Technology Example Language And Communication For Technology â€" Assignment Example > The Touchscreen/Swipe TechnologyIntroductionFirst came the iPhones, then the iPod and now the unmatched creativity at Apple Inc, has come up with the pioneering technology of the iPad. An iPad is an electronic device that experts have defined as a series of tablet mini-computers that is designed for the purposes of audio-visual application such as movies, computer games, and music and so on (Carlson, 2012). By size and perhaps weight, this piece of innovation does not exceed the ordinary iPhone or mini laptop computers. It has a virtual on-screen keyboard in place of the otherwise bulky physical keyboard. The invention of the iPad has been described as: going the extra mile in the world of technology. The operating system used on the iPhone is the very one used by the iPad. There is no iPhone application that cannot run on the iPad. The thing that has the brain of the layman to the world of mystery is the way in which the touch screen of the iPad works. So the topic of debate has been how exactly does the touch screen technology work, and what is the significance of the technology in the world today? This essay is written in an attempt to answer in part the issue in question. An overview of the iPad touch screen/swipe technologyThe touch screen is fast replacing manual hardware such as the physical keyboard and the computer mouse as well as the joysticks that have been in use for as long as computers have been. The first ever touch screen technology was brought into being by one E. A Johnson in the United Kingdom in 1971. This is the same technology that has undergone improvements to be used in the contemporary smart phones. The biggest improvement of the technology of touch screen was pioneered by Apple Inc. The reasoning behind the way a touch screen works is not easy to understand but can be explained in a simple form to make sense. The touch screen is an electronic layer of very thin slides that are sensitive to touch and light. These sensors locate the position of a person’s finger through detecting the inconsistency in the strata of slides (Cohen et al, 2011). The screen is linked to the set of programs within the iPad so as to execute instructions upon touch. When the screen senses contact, it sends a signal to the appropriate program. The program to which the signal is sent depends on which display mode the iPad was in during the contact. It is no puzzle then why touching the screen when in numeric mode, a number will appear on the screen. The design adopted by the apple company is a multi-interface display that enables a user to operate various applications at once. The iPad has a very sensitive and powerful Wi-Fi that is capable of linking to local area networks of 3G and 4G. The visual clarity and audio brilliance of this piece of pioneering technology make it an outstanding innovation. Its internet connection has such outstanding features as censorship (Mazo Trautschold, 2012). For instance most pornographic sites can not be accessed through the device. As such it serves the function of preventing moral decay.

Anne Moodys Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay - 1127 Words

Anne Moodys Coming of Age in Mississippi Coming of Age in Mississippi is the amazing story of Anne Moodys unbreakable spirit and character throughout the first twenty-three years of her life. Time and time again she speaks of unthinkable odds and conditions and how she manages to keep excelling in her aspirations, yet she ends the book with a tone of hesitation, fear, and skepticism. While she continually fought the tide of society and her elders, suddenly in the end she is speaking as if it all may have been for not. It doesn?t take a literary genius nor a psychology major to figure out why. With all that was stacked against her cause, time and time again, it is easy to see why she would doubt the future of the civil rights†¦show more content†¦Her entire time spent in Canton is met with little support, if not disgust, by whites as well as blacks. While the county is primarily black citizens, they still remain submissive to the white citizens in the area. This truly confuses and annoys Moody. She is looked upon with contempt by nearly all of the elder blacks, and can only seem to reach a small number of teenagers. This is when she privately realizes that if a change is to come, it has to come with the younger generations, not with the older. She again refers to the elder blacks as brainwashed and afraid to take what is theirs. The blacks in the county held nearly half the land, yet most were barely doing well enough to feed their families. She seems to initially think that the inferior thinking is only prominent in Centerville and Woodville, but when she realizes that this same mentality is present in Canton as well as all other parts of Mississippi, as well as New Orleans, this is only another nail in the coffin of her dream. Aside from the mentality with which situations were dealt with, the events that occurred to Moody were also quite devastating. The death of Medgar Evans, the leader of the NAACP, the bombing of the Sunday school class directly after the march on Washington, the open beating of McKinley during the demonstration in Canton are only a few events which caused her to question what it was all worth. The people in the community are of two groups based on caste Harijans and Grounders shacking on southern and northern portion of the community severally. A convenient sampling of 25 kids from each group was selected. Demographic information and information on grade of acute upper respiratory infection and behavioural responses were collected from both the groups utilizing an experimental checklist and structured interview agenda. For the experimental group steam inspiration with Tulsi was administered for 10 yearss prior to each disposal steam inspiration on every twenty-four hours and after disposal the grade of AURI utilizing experimental checklist and informations on behavioural responses was assessed daily by self study from the female parent during the period of 11 yearss. The control group continued to utilize the application of Vicks and milk with Piper nigrum and Curcuma longa. Data on grade of acute upper respiratory infection and behavioural responses was collected as for the experimental group. The informations were analyzed utilizing descriptive and illative statistics. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS: Demographic informations In experimental group, bulk of the samples 60 % were in the age group of 13 – 24 female parents and in control group 60 % of the samples were in the age group of 6 – 12 female parent, Majority of the samples in experimental group 52 % and 60 % in control group were females. 48 % of the samples in experimental group and 44 % of the samples in control group were male. All the samples 100 % in both the groups were immunized. In the experimental group 48 % of the samples and 44 % in control group had primary degree of instruction 32 % of the samples in experimental group and 36 % in control group had secondary degree of instruction 20 % of the samples in both the group were illiterate. Majority of the samples 64 % in experimental group and 52 % in control group had the income of Rs. 2001 – 3000 per month and 36 % of the samples in experimental group and 48 % of the samples in control group had the income of Rs. 3001- 4000 per month. Signs and symptoms of acute upper respiratory infection The marks observed were fluid nose, sneezing, lacrimation of eyes, pink and glistening mucous membrane of nose, presence of crusts on the olfactory organ, febrility, cough, ruddy and conceited pharynx. The acute upper respiratory infection was assessed in three degree – no infection, mild infection and moderate infection. Before intercession, 60 % of the samples had mild grade of infection in experimental group. In control group 84 % of the samples had mild grade of infection and 16 % of the samples had moderate grade of infection. In experimental group on 11th twenty-four hours after intercession all 100 % of the samples had no infection. In the control group 84 % of samples had mild degree infection and 12 % had moderate grade of infection on 11th twenty-four hours. The average mark of grade of infection in experimental group should hold a important decrease after the steam inspiration therapy on 11th twenty-four hours. Behavioral responses of experimental and control group The behavioural responses of kids with acute upper respiratory infection were assessed under 2 classs such as physical activity and societal activity in three degrees [ inactive, moderate, and extremely active ] . The behavioural responses assessed were calls of the kid, sleep, jobs in eating, respond to tickle, involvement to play with playthings, smiling, response of the kid when called by name running about, want to be carried by female parent ever, involvement in playing with other kids. Before intercession in the experimental group bulk 69 % of the samples was physically and socially in active, 40 % were samples reasonably active and in control group 50 % of the samples were physically and socially in active and 50 % of the samples were reasonably active. None of the samples in both the group were active. On 11th twenty-four hours in experimental group all the samples 100 % were extremely active and control group 66 % of the samples were in active and 34 % were reasonably active. In the experimental group the mean mark was 0.00 which was less compared to the control group. This shows the consequence of steam inspiration therapy that improves the behavioural responses of kids with acute upper respiratory infection. Significant Findingss: There was a important difference in average mark of grade of acute upper respiratory infection of experimental group ( t=21.88, P A ; lt ; 0.05, df-48 ) compared to command group. Hence, the research hypothesis H1was accepted at 0.05 degree of significance. There was a important difference in the average behavioural responses score between the experimental and control group ( t=39.44, df-48, p A ; lt ; 0.05 % ) . Hence, the research hypothesis H2 was accepted at 0.05 degree of significance. There was no important association between the demographic variables and grade of acute respiratory infection. Decision The grade of acute upper respiratory infection and behavioural responses is same for both the group before intercession. But, after intercession there was important decrease in experimental group for all mark and symptoms of acute upper respiratory infection where in control group there was no important decrease. There was a important betterment in the behavioural responses in experimental group after intercession and in control group there was no such betterment in the behavioural responses. Deduction Nursing Practice Steam inspiration therapy with Tulsi foliages had an consequence on grade of acute upper respiratory infection and behavioural responses in kids. Lasers Essays - Laser Science, Gas Lasers, Laser, Photonics

Lasers The light from lasers differs from ordinary light in several important aspects. Ordinary light from a light bulb travels randomly in all directions (unless the bulb is equipped with an integral reflector that directs the light). The light is thus incoherent. Even when incoherent light is directed with a reflector, it still spreads rapidly. The light from a laser is temporary and spatially coherent. This means that all of the wave-fronts of light are lined up in time and space (see Diagrams). The waves of light go up and down in sync, and travel in the same direction. Coherent light spreads less than other types of light. For example the beam of a tightly focused flashlight would spread between 2 degrees and 5 degrees over a 3 meter (10 ft) throw distance. The sides of a laser beam are almost parallel but the light still spreads slightly. This spread is called divergence and is measured in milliradians (mrad). If a laser has a specified divergence of 5 mrad, then in the above example with a 3 meter throw (10 ft), a laser beam will spread only about 3/20 of a degree. This is a simplified explanation of the process of stimulated emission. If you are interested in more detailed information about this subject, you should consult a science or physics book. Let us take the HeNe laser as an example. If a glass tube were filled with a mixture of helium and neon gas; and an electrical current were applied to the electrodes, the gas would emit light energy. This glowing gas is referred to as a plasma. You are already familiar with this glowing gas in the form of the neon signs you see at your favourite restaurants. We now have a neon tube but not a laser so let's take a closer look at how the laser's light is produced. Under normal conditions the electrons in a gas atom orbit at a fixed distance and pattern around the nucleus; this is the ground state or most stable configuration of the atom. When an electrical charge travels through the gas in the tube (energy is pumped into the gas), it excites or stimulates the atoms. Some of the electrons absorb this energy by jumping up to the next stable orbit. This configuration is unstable. The electron wants to return to its regular orbit, the ground state. As the excited (stimulated) atoms in the gas relax back to the ground state, some of the energy that excited the electron(s) is emitted (released) in the form of random photons of light This is called spontaneous emission. This is how a neon sign (or other gas discharge light such as a mercury vapour lamp) produces light. The photons travel rapidly in all directions. They are visible along the length of the neon tube or radiate outward from the light source. The spontaneous emission is not enough to cause lasing action. Lasers are very different from neon tubes in that they amplify the glowing effect via stimulated emission. Stimulated emission can only occur when there is a "population inversion" in the energy state of the lasing medium (in this case gas). Laser tubes are designed in a long narrow configuration with a central bore. At either end of the bore there are mirrors. These mirrors must be held in precise alignment for the laser to work properly. In most HeNe lasers the mirrors are permanently attached or sealed onto the ends of the tube -- sometimes referred to as hard seal technology. In higher power lasers the mirrors are usually not mounted on the ends of the tube itself, but on an external resonator that forms part of the laser frame. This allows for changing the mirror optics or adding a littrow prism if a specific output wavelength (colour) is required. The mirrors must be perfectly aligned so that the emissions from the gas in the tube will be amplified. Some of the photons of light randomly emitted by the relaxing gas atoms will be travelling parallel to the bore (centre) of the laser tube. These photons will strike the mirror at the end of the tube and will be reflected back through

Zebbra Muscles essays

Zebbra Muscles essays The zebra mussel is a native species of the Europe area. It was originally introduced into the United States by accident, through the ballast water in ocean-going freighters that came from European ports (Officials). The reason this was possible was because the ballast tanks equalize the weight of the ship and its cargo by filling up with the same water from which the ship floats, and also taking what ever may be in the water into the tanks as well. Then later they empty the water at a different location, relocating what ever was in the tanks to a new ecosystem, where the problems soon followed. Once they were introduced into the lake they began to reproduce at an alarming rate. The problem was at first, just as with most other alien species there were not any known predators in order to keep the numbers at bay. Soon after other problems began to develop. The mussels liked to be around flowing water, because that would bring food to them. This posed a big problem for those who relied on intake pipes such as power plants. The mussels would crowd around these intake pipes so tightly that they would in some cases actually stop the flow of water through these pipes. Also the zebra mussel devours microscopic plants at the bottom of the food chain (Faber B1). These plants are vital to the survival of the native species of the lake. If a part of the food chain is broken especially close to the bottom then the entire ecosystem suffers. In some cases the introduction of this species to lake Erie was thought to be worse than the oil spill in Alaska (Faber B1). Reason being, exotic introductions are permanent and spreading, they cant be cleaned up like oil spills. In a hundred years it is possible to substantially clean up an oil spill, but for the zebra mussels they will have spread across America. It was only at first that this mussel was thought to be all bad, but after a couple years of ...

How to Compare High Schools Using SAT Scores

How to Compare High Schools Using SAT Scores SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you’re reading this article, I assume you’re in search of a good high school. When you compare high schools, average SAT score is a useful tool. What does an average SAT score represent? Why should you care about a school’s average SAT score? How do you even find a school’s average SAT score? I’ll answer that and more in this guide. What Does a High School’s Average SAT Score Represent? When considering what a high school’s average SAT score represents, you need to know what the SAT measures. While the College Board may argue that an SAT score simply measures a student’s academic ability, the SAT measures not only academic ability but also other things such as perseverance. What I mean by perseverance is a student’s determination to do well. While a genius might be able to get a 2400 on the SAT with no practice, a student with just slightly above-average intelligence can also get a 2400 with enough practice. For this reason, an SAT score reveals both a student’s academic ability and their willingness to work hard. A high school’s average SAT score represents these same qualities: academic ability and perseverance. However, in terms of an entire high school, its â€Å"academic ability† is dependent upon the quality of education it provides, and its â€Å"perseverance† is dependent upon the caliber of students. A high school's average SAT score helps answer questions such as: Do the students at that school care about their education? Do they study? Do they practice for the SAT? Do they care about pursuing a four-year degree? Why Should You Care About a High School’s Average SAT Score? You should care about a high school’s average SAT score because higher SAT scores can indicate a better quality of education and a better quality of student at that school. Since the SAT measures academic ability and your education is responsible for your knowledge, the better the quality of education you receive, the better you’ll perform on the SAT. Though, as I said before, your SAT score is also affected by how much you prepare for the test. If a high school’s average SAT score is high, the students at that high school are probably more invested in their high school education and more committed to getting into a 4-year college than students at other high schools. These students probably study more and spend more time preparing to take the SAT. You should want to send your child to a high school with a higher average SAT score, where they’ll likely be surrounded by like-minded, hard-working students and receive a higher quality of education. Devil’s Advocate: Why Shouldn’t You Rely Too Heavily On Average SAT Score? A school’s average SAT score can indicate the quality of education and students, but it may not give you the full picture. As an example, some public high schools have magnet (or gifted) programs that are separated from the â€Å"regular† track at that high school. These programs usually have a superior quality of students and teachers compared to the rest of the school. My public high school had an International Baccalaureate magnet program. The admissions requirements for this program were high, but there were no requirements for students on the â€Å"regular† high school track. This program had superior teachers who only taught IB classes. I’d bet the average SAT score for IB students was higher than the average SAT score for students on the â€Å"regular† track. However, the average SAT score for my high school does not separate IB and non-IB students. The number includes the scores of all students at the school. For this reason, you can’t distinguish what the caliber of education and student will be within a specific magnet program versus the â€Å"regular† track. As I said before, your SAT score is also affected by how much effort you put into studying for the test. If you attend a high school with a low average SAT score, that does not mean you’re going to have a low SAT score. If you attend a high school with a high average SAT score, that does not guarantee you'll get a high SAT score. No matter which high school you attend, you can still study, learn the test format and strategies, and achieve a high score on the SAT. However, you should try to attend the high school with the best quality of students and teachers so that you’ll receive the best education you can, be challenged in school, and be well prepared for the SAT. How to Find a School’s Average SAT Score There are four methods for tracking down a public school’s average SAT score: Through the Department of Education website (Note: This only works for PUBLIC high schools. Also, this is the ONLY way to find average SAT scores by school district.) Through the school’s website (however, not all schools publish this information on their websites) By emailing a school administrator Simply Google Searching â€Å"[High School Name] Average SAT Score† (though this can be unreliable) The best method to find average SAT score by high school is to use the Department of Education’s website for your state. NOTE: this will only work for some states. For a full explanation of how to find a district’s or specific public high school’s average SAT score using this method (and for a list of states that don't provide this data), read our article on SAT Scores by High School and District. This approach is the only way to guarantee you’re getting up-to-date, correct, unbiased information. For private high schools (or as another search option for public high schools), you could try the Google search method, looking on the high school’s website, or sending an email to an administrator at that high school. However, websites and Google search can often have outdated information (i.e. SAT score averages from three years ago). Outdated information is still somewhat useful as it can give you a sense of how the school is performing; however, there can be big score differences in just a few years if there are changes in the school administration and teaching staff. There's also the possibility that the school doesn't post this data on its website. If you email administrators, you may also be given outdated information (if they haven’t seen the most recent statistics). Also, it may take them a while to respond to your request with their busy schedule or if they’re on summer vacation. Be a curious cat! What Should You Look for in SAT Data? In the SAT data, you should be looking at the average composite SAT score. NOTE: Typically, states publish average SAT scores by section. You’ll need to add the average section scores together to approximate the average composite SAT score if they don't include composite score as a separate category. The average composite SAT score is the main number you should be concerned with. The higher the number, the better. Read more about that in our other guide: SAT Scores by High School and District. You can also look at the individual section scores. The Math section score may give you a sense of how strong or weak the Math program is. The closer to 800 (the highest possible section score), the better. A high score most likely means a higher quality math program. The Critical Reading and Writing sections (or Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section - for data from 2016 or later) will give you a sense of the quality of English education at that school. Again, same as Math, the closer to 800 (the highest possible section score), the better. A high score most likely means a higher quality of English classes. From the data, you can also find the fraction of students who took the SAT at a particular high school. NOTE: some states will only list the number of students who took the SAT and will not include overall school enrollment. You will not be able to figure out the fraction of students who took the SAT unless you have both pieces of data. However, if your state does provide you with the total enrollment number and the number of test-takers, such as California does, you can determine the fraction of students who took the SAT. As an example here is a screenshot of the SAT data from the California Department of Education’s website: To determine the fraction of students who took the SAT at a specific high school, take the number of test takers (listed under the NumTstTakr column) and divide it by the number of enrolled students (under Enroll912). If I were looking at Alameda Science and Technology Institute (the highlighted school), the fraction of students who took the SAT would be: 61 / 169 or about 36% Don't read too much into this number because it doesn't tell the whole story. The enrollment includes the TOTAL number of students, and you wouldn’t expect Freshmen or Sophomores to be taking the SAT. While 36% seems small, you need to take into account: The fact that Alameda Science and Technology Institute has about 50 students per grade level. Typically, only Juniors and Seniors will take the SAT in a given year, and there are about 100 Juniors and Seniors at Alameda. Some students may opt to take the ACT instead. When accounting for all of that, it seems that close to 100% of Alameda Science and Technology Institute students will end up taking the SAT or ACT before they graduate, which is impressive. While you can look at the fraction of students who took the SAT at a specific high school, the more important number is the average SAT score for that high school. Summary A high school's average SAT score can reveal the quality of education and quality of students at that school. However, when you compare high schools, their average SAT scores will not always tell you the whole story. For example, at schools with magnet programs, magnet students' SAT scores are mixed with the "regular" students' SAT scores to provide the school's average SAT score. Students in the magnet track may have a higher average SAT score (as they may be receiving a higher quality education and be harder working students), but you wouldn't be able to tell from the overall average SAT score of that school. There are several options for finding out a high school's average SAT score. Not all methods will work in all states or for all schools. Check out our other guide on SAT Scores by High School and District to find out the best method for you. When you find the average SAT score data, you should look for the composite SAT score. The higher this score is, the better. What’s Next? If you're taking the SAT, you should learn about the format of the new SAT, and also, check out some general tips on how to prepare for the SAT. Short case study analysis - Essay Example However, his new policy did not work since operating manager including those in Daniels department continued to hire workers informally. David Hall was hired as a research engineer, and his name was presented to the president by a former vice president of engineering company who was not employed by that time. After three months seagle became suspicious about some irregularities in Hall’s background. Hall’s information about where he had undertaken his graduate and undergraduate engineering course was not true. Hall was very competent in his work, and the personnel did not know the strategy for changing the cart before the horse. SWOT analysis Strengths and weaknesses The company’s strength is seen in the fact that it is expecting an increase in of 200% in sales this is a very good margin. Despite giving false information in his application letter, Hall is a very competent professional and even the president wondered what the company would do without him. Personne l manager is a competent human resource manager since he sees the need for having a centralised policy for hiring and recruiting professionals. ... Identification of major problems The major problem in this case study is implementation of centralised policy of hiring professionals. Even after getting the go ahead of coming up with a new practice in his department, the new policy does not work, and other managers are still interfering with how recruitment and hiring is done. When Hall was being employed there was no formal interview done instead, he was called at a home office where a personal interview was done. This act underrated the personnel manager this he was not included in the interview. The interview was conducted by the president who does not have personnel skills and knowledge instead of the personnel director. Another challenge was the uncertainty of how to handle the critical information in Hall’s personnel file. Hall had shown a lot of competence in his work and the company as doing so well through his good work Significant factors Recruitment is one among the foremost vital elements of human resource manage ment, this function of management help to minimise any potential employee’s problems which may arise in the future. Adopting the centralised method is very vital for the organisation to avoid personal conflicts in terms of duties. Possible courses of action However, if the achievement is not done effectively then this may have wide reaching implications for the organisation future. Screening and talent Matching may be a specialist unit of personnel management function. Normally, the human resource manager should accompany the interview panel with an organisational intention of serving to line managers in creating choices on the quality of the candidates to the organisational culture. Neanderthal Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Neanderthal - Term Paper Example The group of mammals was named Neanderthals under homo sapiens as dubbed as homo sapiens neanderthalensis (Trinkaus, 1978). From the studies conducted on the skeletons, it has been theorized that the Neanderthals lived during the ice age, thus their name. Researchers based their conclusions basically from the general features of the skeletal remains where it was observed that the Neanderthals had short limbs and a deep, wide ribcage which allowed lesser surface area exposed to the atmosphere and making the internal organs embedded deep within the body to make them warm (bbc.co.uk, 2005). Aside from showing their ability to adapt to the extreme cold during the ice age because of their physical features, they also tell about their way of living. For instance, the bone structures show an exaggerated massiveness in the trunk and limbs of the Neanderthal males and females (Trinkaus, 1978). This could be traced to how they got their food, through hunting. Professor John Shea (bbc.co.uk, 2005) concludes from studying the hunting materials of the Neanderthals that the spears they used were not purposely shot fro m afar but were used on a face to face encounter with their prey. Because the tools were not as sharp to have been used in attacking from a distance, the theory is that, the Neanderthals had to wait on the wild animals until they get near before attacking them. This explains the muscle developments of the Neanderthals as shown by the skeletons and also helps to give light to the fractures found in some of the Neanderthal bones. For instance, Shanidar 3 (Trinkaus, 1978) has a scar o the rib which, based from studies, is theorized to be from an injury during a fight with a fellow Neanderthal or an accidental injury. The predecessors of the homo sapiens were found to have a similar brain size to the modern man (bbc.co.uk, 2005; Tattersall

The Importance of Ion Channels Essay -- Disease, Disorders

This a The Importance of Ion Channels: An Analysis of the Long QT Syndrome Inheritance method Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is an uncommon congenital heart condition in which patients affected by this syndrome are at high risks for cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death due to mutations in cardiac ion channels (Crotti et al., 2008). There are two particular variants to the Long QT Syndrome; one is called the Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome (J-LN), which is associated with deafness, and the other has been named the Romano-Ward Syndrome (R-W), in which there is no connection with deafness (Crotti et al., 2008). The Romano-Ward Syndrome is known to be the more common type of LQTS and is autosomal dominant (Russell et al., 1996), whereas the Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome is less common and is autosomal recessive (Crotti et al., 2008). Gene(s) responsible or implicated in the disorder The research community has divided the Long QT Syndrome by types, depending upon the different mutations in four of the cardiac ion- channel genes, KVLQT1, HERG, SCN5A, and KCNE1 (Zareba et al., 1998). Mutations within these voltage-gated ion channels ultimately disrupt the normal nerve impulses that take place within myocardial cells. Sodium and potassium channels play key roles during action potentials as it is through these channels that their respective ions are able to enter and leave the cell in order to generate electrical excitation or inhibition throughout. Such channels are composed of subunits of proteins, and damage within even one subunit can alter the overall function of the action potential, which will alte... ...ed. Bcg Matrix Critique

Marketing Critique: BCG Matrix Your Name Here Table of Contents Introduction3 Concept Overview3 Functional Critique5 Intellectual Critique6 Ethical Critique7 Political Critique8 Conclusion8 Bibliography9 Introduction This paper will attempt to provide a broad critique of the Boston Consulting Group Matrix in light of the ideas of Hackley (2009). In his book Marketing:A Critical Introduction, Hackley presents a framework for analysing marketing models. He suggests that well established marketing concepts should be re-evaluated from time to time, to determine if the marketing studies for that area are applicable to current practice, and revisit the functional, intellectual, ethical, and political relevance of the said concept. I opted to evaluate the Boston Consulting Group model, which is an established tool of the strategic management field, used frequently in marketing circles to optimize product mix.Where alternative versions of the matrix have come up in recent studies, the traditi onal BCG Matrix continues to be popular and this paper intends to evaluate whether the support for the model is justified or needs to be rectified. Concept Overview The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Matrix was initially designed in the works of a leading management consulting firm, the Boston Consulting Group. Henderson (1970) first presented the concept of the Product Portfolio Matrix, the framework of which categorized products within a company's portfolio as â€Å"stars†, â€Å"cash cows†, â€Å"dogs†, or â€Å"question marks†.Also called the Growth-Share Matrix, the model presented by Henderson (1970), organized the products as per their respective growth rate, market share, and positive or negative cash flow. The Matrix was said to create further growth opportunities for the firm if more resources were invested in those products which generated positive cash flows. The model described â€Å"Stars† as those which enjoy a large market share in a rapidly growing industry. Where these stars generate cash, the nature of the market mandates the business to invest cash in order to maintain the product’s market share. The model suggests that continued investment in these â€Å"stars† will eventually lead to these products in becoming â€Å"cash cows† â€Å"Cash Cows† are products which have a large market share in a mature industry. Cash cows are therefore well established, and do not require much investment (marketing expenditures) to continue to generate cash flow. As these products generate cash flow, they are highly guarded. Over time, however, these cows may lose appeal in the market and may have to be retrenched. â€Å"Question Marks† are products which have a low market share in a high growth industry. These products require significant cash investments to generate any kind of boost in sales. Strategies in the case of question marks may either lean towards expansion or retrenchment, depend ing on the market share growth enjoyed by the product. Lastly, there are the â€Å"dogs† which are product lines with low market share in low-growth markets. The nature of the market usually results in these products being produced at a cost disadvantage, and as a result, the cash flow generated from these products is negligible. Businesses usually seek to divest these products, unless they serve an alternate strategic aim.Functional Critique The BCG Matrix presents a strong framework as to how products can be managed from a strategic marketing perspective. At the core of it, the functionality of the BCG Matrix is focused around maximizing returns on investment and how best to deploy organizational resources (Cooper, Edgett, Kleinschmidt, 1999). However, there have been several critiques of its applicability (Stalk and Stern, 1998). In particular, the model has been criticized for its polarities with respect to how the market growth and market shares have been presented. In th e real world, products do not have a high or low share, and are often stuck somewhere in the middle (Hambrick, MacMillan, and Day, 1982). The matrix presents no ideas as to what kind of strategies are to be implemented for the product in this case. Further, market growth rate has been cited as an important driver of product development. Contrary to the advice of the BCG Matrix, market growth rate is viable only till the point of saturation, after which point it would be counterintuitive for the firm to be investing in a product that does not enjoy majority stake (Stalk and Stern, 1998).The critical view of the BCG Growth-Share Matrix was also shared by Morrison and Wensley (1991), who claimed that the model was â€Å"myopic† as it prescribed a set of strategic solutions, rather than encourage marketing executives to think creatively with respect to their product lines. On the contrary, Cooper, Edgett and Kleinschmidt (1999) found in their study that firms which centered strat egy on the product portfolio model were not only more financially viable, but marginally outperformed other firms. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that where the applicability of the BCG model may be challenging, the results it produces are enough for strategists to continue using the model. Intellectual Critique Morrison and Wensley (1991) found that the BCG Matrix set a standard for strategic models, and that a plethora of similar matrix style models came about in the years after the BCG Matrix was introduced (Wind, Mahajan, and Swire, 1983). However, this is where the intellectual contribution of the BCG Matrix ends, they argue. They claim that the Matrix oversimplified the nature of marketing strategies, and streamlined product arrangements in a way that was confirmatory rather than innovative, a view shared by Marren (2004). Other researchers tend to believe that the introduction of the BCG matrix brought forth the importance of financial management in marketing. In particular Schoeffler, Buzzell, ; Heany (1974), Wind, Mahajan ; Swire (1983), and Dirkinderen ; Crum (1984) found that the model recalibrated organizations to focus their strategies more around portfolio management and enhancement. The simplicity of the matrix meant that it could be applied to other areas of marketing management, such as product life cycle model (Barksdale ; Harris, 1982), sales force management (Strahle ; Spiro, 1986). Despite the fact that the model faced significant critique from the academia when it was first launched, it is ironic that the BCG Matrix continues to be an inevitable curriculum component in almost every Marketing and Business Management program around the world. In their study, Morrison and Wensley (1991) found that a majority of instructors continued to espouse the benefits of the matrix to their students, despite having some reservations about its applicability. Perhaps the best appraisal of the intellectual value of the BCG Matrix was provided by Henderson, the creator of the model: â€Å"a milestone on the search for insight into business system dynamics, but certainly not the end of the road† (Moore, 2001). Ethical Critique As per Hackley (2009), marketing studies need to examine the ethical and social values which surround marketing practice and theory. In the case of the Boston Consulting Group Matrix, the model is an internal strategic tool which shapes product assortment which is to be deployed to the market. The nature of the model is such that it advocates products with high market share in strong market growth. The ethical quandary posed here is whether the organization should retrench a product line which has low market share, in an industry of low market growth, but the product serves a purpose that is beneficial to society (such as pharmaceuticals). In a similar vein, is it ethical for a company to invest more resources into promoting a product in a growing market, even when the company is aware of the adverse effects of the product (such as cigarettes). In other words, should an organizations product assortment be negligent of social benefits, and be determined solely on market dynamics alone (McDonald ; Leppard, 1992), in a time when businesses are advocating principles of corporate social responsibility? It is also pertinent to note that the BCG matrix encourages organizations to continue investing in profitable ventures (â€Å"cash cows†), whereas it suggests retrenching investment to those products (â€Å"dogs†) which are not responding to market stimulation initiatives. Considering the large research and development expenditures that go into creating and launching a product, it is not clear from the BCG model about how long the company should wait before removing the product from markets altogether (Seeger, 1984).Therefore, users of this model may want to base decisions in the context of net social benefit to continue driving the long term sustainability of the company and soci ety at large. Political Critique As Hackley (2009) indicated, when analysing any marketing tool, it is important to analyse where the concept originated and what institutional forces stood to advantage from its evolution. In the case of the BCG Matrix, as described earlier, the model was originated in the work of Henderson (1970).The matrix was an integral component of the Boston Consulting Group and was used by several influential benchmark companies at the time of its launch. The matrix also enjoyed coverage in the press, despite strong criticism by academia (Morrison and Wensley, 1991). It is clear that the hype around the model stood to benefit the Boston Consulting Group the most, a fact that is confirmed by the fact that the company propagates its use to this very day, despite being aware of its shortcomings. It has also been found that aside from promoting and capitalizing on the â€Å"success† of their models, consultancies go great lengths to ensure that they attract the highest profiled organizations to employ their services, so that they can charge higher consulting fees citing the quality of their past work (O'Shea & Madigan, 1998). Conclusion In conclusion, it is clear that the Boston Consulting Group Matrix is flawed in many respects, but continues to enjoy support in academic circles for its implications of strategy. It also serves to purpose that the model has inspired the creation of numerous other matrices to assist organizations in strategizing better. However, as with any marketing tool, it is important to keep in mind the ethical implications of the decision-making advised by these strategic models. Bibliography Cooper, R. G. , Edgett, S. Executive Summary This report will explore the issue of entrepreneurship within the cleaning Industry. The cleaning industry is vital to the economy, through the large numbers of staff employed, the revenue generated and the role it plays in the maintenance of public health and hygiene. There are two major markets within the cleaning industry: the consumer market and the commercial market. There are three key issues facing the entrepreneur in this industry: the quality of service, the quality retention of staff and the image of the industry. The definition of an entrepreneur covers a wide range of understandings depending on the researcher or writer studied. The Oxford English Dictionary (Simpson,1989) defines an entrepreneur as a ‘person who attempts to profit by risk and initiative’(p.408). This indicates entrepreneurs use a high degree of initiative and that they are willing to assume high degrees of risk. â€Å"Jean-Baptist Say, the French economist usually credited with inventing the word said; ‘entrepreneurs shift economic resources from an area of lower productivity into an area of higher productivity and greater yield’†(Burns,2001,p.4). The entrepreneur attempts to do this by seizing opportunities for change in technology, resources, demographics or prices to create value and a new demand or a new market (Burns, 2001) giving customers benefits through greater choice and price competi tion (Frederick, Kuratko, Hodgetts, 2006).This report will give a broad overview of the cleaning industry and will then look at some of the issues faced by

Obesity Is A Medical Condition - 2163 Words

Interest of public in the topic of obesity has been rising because of recent examples like heart disease, stroke and some other chronic diseases that caused by obesity. Obesity is a medical condition which is defined as unusual or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. Obesity happens because of having too much body fat, and the formula to calculate the body mass index (BMI) is the square of a person’s height (in meters) divide his or her weight (in kilograms). Obesity is different from overweight which includes the extra weight from his or her muscle, bone, fat or body water that affect the body weight of a person (Medline Plus, n.d.). For instance, slim individual may also have a high BMI that is measured obese even though he or she does not have too much body fat, but heavily boned or muscled. Thus, it is crucial to remember that, while BMI is considerably correlated with the amount of body fat of a person, it cannot conclude the body type of that person, and may not accurately predict a person’s health risks in certain circumstances. Types There are myriad kinds of obesity have been divided into several classes by the World Health Organization (WHO), ranging from class I to class III. Besides, these classes have been subdivided into categories alike mild obesity and super obesity in order to offer a frame of reference. Mass-elite theorists and subcultures Free Essays

Academic writing is usually best when it takes a dispassionate attitude to its subject; when it reviews the several contesting scholarly opinions around a question, before judging the value of each of them. But sometimes a writer is given a question that allows him to write destructive criticism, and to champion the merits of one argument only. This present question is such a question. We will write a custom essay sample on Mass-elite theorists and subcultures or any similar topic only for you Order Now If one takes a supercilious attitude towards it then he might expel it at once by arguing that neither Matthew Arnold nor F. R. Leavis – men who sought the promotion of culture through the study of high literature and the reform of education – would have descended at all to study the subcultures of Goths and Trekkers. These groups have produced no serious literature and they have done little to reform education. And so one can easily cement such a fierce attitude into a strong essay – though one that would sadly be very short and unmarkable! If instant dismissal is not appropriate, then a writer who has studied Arnold’s and Leavis’s definitions of culture can argue ceaselessly that neither man would have thought Goths and Trekkers a positive development for culture. A short statement about definition. There are of course manifold definitions of culture. Many recent writers define culture in terms of mass-culture, within which all groups and subcultures belong. If culture is defined like this then Goths and Trekkers are both part of culture and can be said to expand culture by pushing it wider and making it more diverse. Arguments like this are possible; but they are not possible for our present question. In this essay one has to measure these groups against the definitions of Leavis and Arnold only; and leave aside the merits of any modern definitions. Let us then examine the definition of Leavis and Arnold. Matthew Arnold famously defined culture as to ‘†¦ know the best that has been said and thought in the world’. Someone who is cultured has learnt to perceive beauty, perfection, truth and justice through literature and art. In Culture and Anarchy and Essays in Criticism Arnold argues that culture is centered upon education: thus the expansion of culture is possible only if it is accompanied by an equal expansion of education. So: somebody who is highly cultured is also highly educated. F.R.  Leavis had a very similar definition of culture. Leavis argued even more explicitly than Arnold that there is an unbreakable bond between knowledge of the humanities and the acquisition of culture. As G. Steiner says ‘The commanding axiom in Leavis’s life-work is the conviction that there is a close relation between a man’s capacity to respond to art and his general fitness for humane existence.’ Despite the esoteric sound of these words they do say something vital about culture. The key word is humane. Someone who has studied great works of literature tends to have better judgment and is kinder to his fellow man than people who have not. Leavis says ‘†¦ thinking about cultural and social matters ought to be done by minds of some real literary education, and done in an intellectual climate formed by a vital literacy culture’. In short: a healthy culture and society depends upon a large number of its citizens studying and thinking about the classics. Leavis famously defined these arguments in his controversial Richmond Lecture – should we say polemic? – against C. P. Snow. The lecture is Leavis’s proposal for the future of culture in England. Leavis wanted a small, economically weaker England that would be highly literate and cultured — instead of a huge commercialized and capitalistic society that would be less literate. Thus we see in Leavis, as in Arnold, a definition of culture as a society that knows intimately great works of art. According to this definition, any group that progresses culture must go beyond the culture that has gone before. Do Goths and Trekkers then add to what we can learn from Homer, Shakespeare and the Bible? (This is a fair question if measured by the definition above). The answer must be no. The Goth and Trekker subcultures have not produced one serious piece of literature or music; even if one stretches Star Trek into some definition of art, the movies and show are not the invention of Trekkers, but the object of their devotion. Goths claim to have a passion for literature; but this passion has not created any literature of their own. Likewise – even though it is not one of their aims – neither of these groups has done anything to reform education or our universities. We cannot study Goth culture from its literature, because there is not any. But we can examine some of the statements of Goth members to see whether there is any sign of culture as defined by Leavis and Arnold. The following article called ‘A Short Treatise on Goth subculture’ is taken from the internet. The author, Chameleon, says that Goths are defined by ‘a morbid sense of humor’, ‘appreciation of the darker side of life’, ‘tolerance of lifestyles considered weird by the masses’ and an ‘apolitical attitude towards society’. Rus Haslage, the President of the International Federation of Trekkers, says that the philosophy of trekkers is that ‘†¦everyone is different, and it is those differences that make us special. And, it is those differences that make meshing our sparks even more beneficial to us all.’ In both these statements the common feature is vagueness of meaning and purpose. Goths and Trekkers feel some solidarity with each other in their interest in the ways of the Goth or Star Trek; but there is no clear or precise thought about the identity and purpose of these groups. To be fair to each group neither claims to add to the wisdom that the great works of literature and art that the West has accumulated; but, if we judge this admission of non-achievement strictly according to the definition of Leavis and Arnold, then the existence of such groups has either no effect or a regressive effect upon culture. Impact of Business on the Stakeholdersâ€Free samples For Students

Question: What Is The Impact Of Business On The Stakeholders? Answer: Intorducation As per my point of view, before running a particular business organization in the market, every individual organization has to follow business ethics values and beliefs. Moorthy (2012) stated that the success of an organization is highly dependent on the product quality and service process. I have noticed that behind maintaining product quality as well as services, every organization has to follow corporate ethics as well as values. Brand identity is one of the most important factors based on which the organizational image and reputation depends highly. I have observed that large number of companies prevailing in the retail sector is facing ethical issues at the workplace that highly affects in maintaining organizational sustainability. The employers fail to maintain effective employee relation within the organization. As a result, the performance level of the employees is decreasing rapidly. Customers are deprived of receiving appropriate service from the organization. Automatically , the retail business sectors are facing challenges in maintaining organizational sustainability. Impact of business decision on the stakeholders: A particular organization is constituted with two kinds of stakeholders primarily that include internal stakeholder and external stakeholder. Among the stakeholders, the importance of customers and employees is most important (Pulina and Timpanaro 2012). I have noticed that the organizational decision leaves a major impact on the stakeholders. In order to satisfy the needs and demands of the employees and organization decides to implement some major strategies such as reward and recognition policy, interpersonal communication with the employees regarding their personal issues at the workplace (Biedenweg, Monroe and Oxarart 2013). At the same time, the organization tends to follow some of the major legislations and acts in order to keep the company free from biasness. The legislation implies health and safety act, right to information act anti-discrimination act, gender equity act, data protection act and many more (Williams and Schaefer 2013). According to me, these specific business decision or initiatives help the organization to maintain employee motivation. However, I have observed that most of the business experts in the retail sector currently fail to maintain employee relation due to the lack of maintaining ethical practices. Company like Woolworths has faced huge employee turnover at the workplace due to the lack of ethical practices (Carroll and Buchholtz 2014). The employers failed to maintain effective communication with the employees. As a result, they showed their intense reluctance for providing good services to the customers. As per my point of view, the implementation of corporate social responsibility is more effective in order to impress the customers mind. While dealing with the customers of different geographical corners most of business organizations tend to follow CSR activities (Tufa 2015). For an example, in order to promote the products in global market The Iconic has decided to organize social events where large number of poor but meritorious students would be contributed education kits and cash for their further studies. As a result, this particular organization is successful to render their image and reputation in the global market. I have noticed that some of the companies tend to implement diversity management at the workplace. With the help of this specific strategy, the customer service executives tend to allow every single customer at their organization for using their services (Crane and Matten 2016). People of every culture and religious attitudes are treated with equal priority. There fore, the question of discrimination does not arise in between the stakeholder and service providers. Therefore, I have realized that the customers showed their flexibility while using the service process. As per the above mentioned discussion I can come into a conclusion that the satisfaction rate of the customers is highly dependent on the business decision and their ethical practices. Legislation that supports the practice: I have already mentioned that some of the relevant legislations are there that supports in maintaining business ethical practices. I believe that organization would be able to maintain its sustainability in the current market only when the service providers would be able to maintain organizational ethical practices. Both the employees and customers are key stakeholder for an organization that helps to render business success (Fredericks 2013). As per my opinion, employees need to get necessary facilities and benefits from the organization as well in order to keep up their level of performance. Implementation of health and safety act as per my point of view is highly important based on which employees feel safe while working within the organization. This particular act ensures that employees facing any kind of health issues should get necessary co-operation from the employers both financially and emotionally (Meijboom and Brom 2012). As a result, employees would not have to face any kind of insecurity to be associated within a business process. As per my opinion, anti-discrimination act helps to maintain business ethics and practices. As per the concept of this anti-discrimination act, both the female and male employees should be treated with equal respect and dignity at the workplace. As a result, the organization would automatically be able to sustain in the business industry for a long time. People belonging to different age group, culture and religious attributes can be associated together at the workplace. Business ethics enables that the skill and competency level of the employee is highly important for an organization rather than their cultural backgrounds (Heizer and Barry 2013). I have noticed that the internal ethical practices is possessed with a major impact on the impression level of customers. Recommendation: After evaluating the entire report regarding the impact of maintaining business ethics and corporate social responsibility for long term sustainability I can provide some of the major recommendations. Retail sectors should follow corporate social responsibilities more effectively for meeting the long-term goal. For an example, the business experts in order to maintain community relation can hire the skillful and competent employees from their regional boundary In order to impress of the customers, the organization can enhance their business diversification strategy more effectively. As a result, the number of target market would be increased at the workplace. The employers should maintain effective communication with the employees in order to know their challenges at the workplace. If the employees get enough scope to share their difficulties, they would be motivated in performing well towards reaching the business goal. In this kind of situation, the interpersonal communication between the employees and the employers would be effective automatically. I believe that retail business organizations should have a contribution towards government sponsorship. Government sponsorship is one of the most effective ways of CSR activities. As a result, the organization as well will be able to create a market demand by involving them in government activities. Summary: The entire report has provided a self-reflection on how organizations are able to maintain business ethics. As per my knowledge and experience, the success of an organization is highly dependent on the organizational practices. Business ethics is one of the most effective practices based on which the sustainability of a business is highly dependent. I have discussed the several factors that help an organization to maintain business ethics. I have evaluated the importance of corporate social responsibility in enhancing the organizational sustainability in market. By sharing my personal experience, I have analyzed on how business organizations belonging to the retail sectors are facing difficulties in maintaining sustainability due to the lack of ethical practices.
